California: New Parent Leave Act takes effect
January 1, 2020
On October 12, 2017, the Governor signed into law a new Parental Leave Act, which would require employers with more than 20 employees within a 75 miles radius to provide up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to employees to bond with a child born to, adopted by, or placed for foster care with the employee. Employers would also be required to maintain any group health coverage for employees while they are on parental leave. Other benefits and restrictions apply. Covered employees will need to begin offering parental leave under this law on January 1, 2020.
